What this site is

ACSizeCheck estimates the cooling load of a typical house in US cities, the air conditioner size that covers it and what it costs to run, from public climate and price data and a documented model. It covers the United States only and is informational only.

Not a Manual J

Real houses differ in insulation, windows, shade, ductwork and air leakage in ways a per-city model cannot see. Sizes here are a screening check, not a substitute for a room-by-room load calculation by a qualified HVAC contractor, and no figure should be the only basis for buying or installing equipment.

Costs are estimates

Running costs use state average electricity prices and a typical summer. Your rate plan, thermostat setting, the unit's real efficiency and any given year's weather will change the bill. Installed prices vary widely by region and contractor.

Safety and codes

Central systems, mini-splits and new circuits involve refrigerant and high-voltage wiring and usually need a permit and a licensed installer under local code. Follow the maker's instructions for any window or portable unit.
